AN RAF helicopter airlifted a six-year-old boy with suspected meningitis from his home on Rathlin Island, off the north Antrim coast, to Coleraine Hospital early yesterday.

Cathal McCurdy was found not to have meningitis, and his condition was said to be stable.

Low thick cloud blanketing the island meant the RAF crew had to wear night-vision goggles to make a safe landing.
