Six-year-old Con Downes, injured in a car crash which killed his mother, grandmother brother and aunt yesterday,  remains in a stable but critical condition.

Cork University Hospital today confirmed one of the truck drivers involved in the crash is off the critical list and is now in a stable condition.

The other truck driver hospitalised after the six-car pile-up in Cahir, Co Tipperary, yesterday is being treated locally and could be released later today.

The car Con was traveling was in a head-on crash with a truck on the Dublin to Cork road shortly before 7.30 a.m.

Provisional figures show 22 people died on the roads this month compared to 18 for the whole of January 2003.
