Boy (4) killed in Mullingar collision

A four-year-old boy was killed in a road collision near Mullingar, Co Westmeath this evening.

A four-year-old boy was killed in a road collision near Mullingar, Co Westmeath this evening.

The boy was travelling in a jeep which was in a collision with a van on the N4 Dublin to Sligo road shortly after 5pm.

The jeep was towing a trailer and a van was travelling behind it in the same direction.

The boy was taken to Midlands Regional Hospital Mullingar but he did not survive his injuries.

The driver of the jeep and another occupant were also taken to the hospital. However their injuries are not thought to be life threatening. The driver of the van was not taken to hospital.

The eastbound lane of the road is closed tonight at the Marlinstown exit as gardai forensically examine the scene.
