High street chemist Boots today announced plans to create more than 150 jobs with the opening of five new stores.

The company, which currently employs 1,800 people nationwide, said the extra retail and pharmacy roles would be filled ahead of the shop launches later this year.

Boots Ireland director Rhys Iley also revealed the firm plans to open more stores amid strong demand for its products and services.

“We are optimistic for the medium term and we believe in investing in our staff, their training and providing best service for our customers,” he added.

“We have confidence in the future of retailing in Ireland.”

The chemist is set to release full details of the store locations in coming months.

Last year Boots opened five new stores, bringing the total around the country to 55.

Its first shop in Ireland was set up in Dublin’s Jervis Shopping centre in 1996.
