U2 singer Bono is to receive a US National Civil Rights Museum Freedom Award.

The museum, built on the site in Memphis, Tennessee, where Martin Luther King Jr was assassinated, gives two Freedom Awards every year to people who have worked to advance civil rights.

Bono, who is receiving the museum's "international award" on October 18th, had championed social justice with his music and activism, the museum said.

This year's other award recipient is US House of Representatives politician Mr John Lewis, who "has maintained an unfailing, principled commitment to the ideals of equality and justice".

Past recipients include civil rights pioneer Ms Rosa Parks, former South African president Mr Nelson Mandela and former US president Mr Jimmy Carter.
