Manchester - A 15-month-old child yesterday slept peacefully through a gene therapy operation which was the first of its kind in the world. The surgery on the little girl, who suffers from a genetic disease, transplanted her own bone marrow - which has been genetically altered in a laboratory - back into her. The operation, at the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital, could help hundreds of people if it is successful. - (PA)
