Army bomb disposal experts have made safe a crude explosive device found in Navan, Co Meath, only hours after a previous alert was declared a hoax.

Gardaí called in the bomb experts at 5pm after an improvised device was found at Boreen Keel, Navan.

The device was dismantled at the scene and made safe after 25 minutes.

The remains of the bomb have been given to gardaí for investigation into the incident.

Earlier today, bomb disposal experts and gardaí dealt with a security alert in Navan after a call was received reporting a bomb under a car.

The team arrived on the scene at Commons Road at about 9.15am after gardaí received a call reporting a device.

A spokesman for the Defence Forces said the alert had been declared a hoax and the team had now left the scene.
