Jammu - A bomb exploded on a railway track in the strife-torn Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir yesterday, derailing seven carriages of a passing train and injuring at least eight people, police said.

They said the blast hit the Delhi-bound Shalimar Express at Ria near Vijaipur, about 33 km south-west of the state's winter capital Jammu.

"Because of the low speed of the train, the impact of the explosion was not that powerful. Had it [the train] been in its full speed, the casualty would have been much higher," a senior police official said.
