A local fisherman fishing on St Bridget's Lake in Tulla yesterday contacted gardaí about something he had seen in the water, a Garda statement said.

Local gardaí searched the lake assisted by the Garda Water Unit. The search commenced at first light this morning. "The body was later recovered by the Garda Water Unit and has been removed to Limerick Regional Hospital," the statement said.

It has not yet been determined if the body is that of a man or a woman.

"Searches are continuing and the scene is being preserved. The services of The State Pathologist and The Garda Technical Bureau have been requested," the Garda statement said.
