Lille - The grandson of Louis Bleriot, the pioneering French aviator who made the first flight across the Channel in 1909, crashed yesterday trying to repeat that feat in a replica of his ancestor's primitive craft.

The grandson, also named Louis (54), plummeted into a pond close to Bleriot Beach, near Calais, after flying only a few hundred metres for a film being made about his grandfather. He was not hurt.
