London - The British Prime Minister, Mr Tony Blair, yesterday tried to counter criticism of Labour's handling of the NHS by pledging to seek a massive injection of cash to bring funding up to European levels.

At the end of a damaging week for the government, Mr Blair acknowledged the health service had "problems" and needed more beds, nurses and intensive care. But he urged the public to keep the problems in perspective, and announced NHS reforms.
