London - Britain's Labour government suffered defeat in the House of Lords yesterday in its attempts to ease curbs on what schools can teach about homosexuality.

A government bill which would have obliged schools to teach the value of marriage and "stable relationships" was torpedoed in the upper chamber by opposition Conservative amendments promoting marriage above all other unions.
