The current cold spell is making life difficult for birds, with Birdwatch Ireland urging people to put food out in their gardens for the feathered friends feeling the strain of the cold weather.

A spokesman for Birdwatch Ireland said that as temperatures drop, birds need to eat as much high-energy food as possible to try to keep warm.

It is equally important to ensure that garden birds have a constant supply of fresh drinking water.
