The largest single increase in the Book of Estimates is for the Secret Service, whose allocation has been trebled from £250,000 to £750,000. Asked yesterday why this was, Mr McCreevy revealed that this was a secret - neither he nor his Department knew. Sources later suggested that most of this money will be paid by gardai to informers.
