MILAN – Voters in Milan went to the polls yesterday for a crucial test of Silvio Berlusconi’s diminished political vigour after his government was rocked by a minister’s resignation.

Daniela Melchiorre said she had quit her industry under-secretary job because of his denigration of Italy’s judges and prosecutors at the G8 summit. Berlusconi supporters depicted her as an opportunist. The former magistrate was a member of the last centre-left regime before switching to the right. – (Guardian service)
