Belgrade - Hundreds of police in riot gear clashed with anti-Milosevic protesters in central Belgrade last night after two armoured police vehicles deliberately drove at breakneck speed into strolling demonstrators, writes Gillian Sandford.

Around 10,000 had gathered at Belgrade City hall to protest against the silencing of all the leading non-government media in Serbia and young people had spread out to a key intersection by Studio B Television, which plainclothes police stormed early on Wednesday morning.

The crowd retaliated by setting street rubbish alight, then the riot force charged at them, sending hundreds fleeing. Tear gas grenades were thrown and thousands sought sanctuary in Belgrade City Hall.
