Dhaka - At least 7,000 Bangladeshi children and women are smuggled out of the country on average each year, and many are sold to brothels, the Bangladesh National Women Lawyers' Association (BNWLA) said yesterday.

"At least 7,000 Bangladeshi children and women are being trafficked in a year to neighbouring India, regional Pakistan and Middle East countries," said the BNWLA report. The highest numbers were in 1997 when 14,551 women and children were smuggled out.
