Dhaka - Poor, overpopulated and polluted Bangladesh must strike a balance between development and nature to avert a likely ecological catastrophe, speakers at an environment conference said yesterday.

Air pollution, arsenic contamination of ground water, rapid urbanisation and unplanned housing development needed to be dealt with promptly, they said. Industrial and household waste management and floods and other natural disasters also required attention.
