A bipartisan group of members of the US Congress has urged the Northern Ireland Secretary of State, Dr Mo Mowlam, to halt the use of plastic bullets, or baton rounds.

The letter is co-signed by 21 members of the House of Representatives and has been sent on the initiative of a Republican Congressman, Mr Chris Smith, chairman of the human rights sub-committee, which held hearings on Northern Ireland last week.
