The Government plans to extend restrictions on burning bituminous coal to all major urban areas, the Minister of State for Environment, Mr Dan Wallace, has announced. Restrictions which currently apply in large areas of Dublin and Cork will be proposed by early next year.

Speaking at the annual conference of the Association of Municipal Authorities of Ireland, Mr Wallace said the Government was "determined to maximise the air quality in all urban areas".
