One of the runways at Baldonnel airport has been closed after it was damaged in a suspected act of vandalism last night.

The Defence Forces said a number of “pock marks” were found on the runway during a routine inspection this morning in advance of an Air Corps plane taking off to assist in the search for two fishermen missing off the Dublin coast.

The aircraft took off from the second runway and the airport remains open.

The matter has been referred to An Garda. Defence Force Military Police are also conducting an investigation.

A spokesman for the Defence Forces said security at the airport is being reviewed.
