AN attempt will be made on Monday to force the Ulster Unionist Party chairman of Fermanagh District Council to resign because he took part in parades at the time of the Drumcree standoff.

The motion, put forward by a Roslen independent nationalist councillor, Mr Tony McPhillips, is expected to be defeated as the council has a unionist majority.

The dispute arose because Mr Sam Foster, Deputy Grand Master of the Royal Black Preceptory in Fermanagh and a member of the Orange Order, took part in parades in July.

Mr McPhillips has claimed Mr Foster also took part in illegal roadblocks. Mr Foster has denied this and has condemned them. However, he admitted taking part in Orange Order parades in Fermanagh at the time of the Drumcree crisis.

Sinn Fein yesterday announced it will support Mr McPhillips's motion. The SDLP has yet to decide on its approach.
