A bus carrying a marriage party plunged into a river in India's northeastern state of Assam today, killing at least 47 people, police said.

Most of the victims drowned, they said. More than 70 people were on board, including many women and children.

The crash happened at Sarupeta, about 150 kilometres (100 miles) west of Guwahati, Assam's main city.
