A STUDY suggesting that aspirin does not prevent cardiovascular disease in people with diabetes will influence practice guidelines, a leading endocrinologist has said.
Dr Seán Dineen, a diabetes specialist at University College Hospital, Galway, and senior lecturer at NUI Galway, said: "This new study needs to be considered in clinical decision-making in people with diabetes."
Research in the British Medical Journal suggests that aspirin is of limited benefit to people with diabetes. The authors said that for patients without a history of heart attack or stroke, aspirin would not prevent premature death.
The results show no difference in cardiovascular mortality between patients taking a placebo and those who took daily aspirin.
