Traces of ash from Icelandic volcanoes which erupted thousands of years ago have been found preserved in bogs at Belderrig, on the north Mayo coast. The ash was traced by carbon dating and survey teams are said to be excited by the finds, which will be put on display at a research centre.

Meanwhile, further probings are to be carried out at the nearby Ceide Fields.
