Arsenal knocked champions Manchester United off the top of the premier league on today with a convincing 4-1 win over Middlesbrough at Highbury.

A Thierry Henry penalty, an own goal by Boro's Franck Queudrue and second-half strikes from Robert Pires and Freddie Ljungberg hoisted Arsenal top on alphabetical order.

Charlton Athletic stayed fourth with a 2-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers while Liverpool followed up a midweek win at Chelsea with a 1-0 victory over Aston Villa and Fulham, also chasing a Champions League slot, were 2-1 winners over Everton.

Portsmouth condemned Manchester City to yet another defeat with a 4-2 win at Fratton Park and equally impressive was Bolton's fightback at Ewood Park to beat Blackburn 4-3.

Birmingham beat Southampton 2-1 courtesy of a rare Jeff Kenna winner, as Robbie Keane secured a one nil win over Leeds for Spurs .
