Two women were arrested today following the death of a Polish man in Northern Ireland.

Marek Muszynski (40), from Newry, Co Down, was discovered beaten to death in the street in the city yesterday.

Two other men detained yesterday are still in custody. One woman, aged 19, is being questioned as part of a murder investigation.

Police also arrested an 18-year-old woman today on suspicion of perverting the course of justice.

Police declined to detail the nationality of those arrested and would not say whether they were treating the killing as a race crime. A motive is still being established.

The body of the man, from Sandys Street, Newry, was discovered off Upper Edward Street in the lane behind the city swimming pool just before 1am.

Detectives have appealed for anyone with information or who witnessed suspicious activity to contact them.

They said they wanted to speak to anyone who was in the Upper Edward Street, Monaghan Street or Railway Avenue area any time from late last night through to the early hours of the morning.

They also appealed for information from anyone who may have seen an altercation or disturbance in the same vicinity.
