Gardaí have arrested a 23-year-old male after a "pipe bomb" was thrown from a passing car in Dublin this morning.

The device was not triggered after it hit the ground in Mulhuddart, north-west of the city. Witnesses contacted gardí after the device - described by some as a pipe-bomb - was thrown onto Lady's Well Road.

A 23-year-old was arrested in west Dublin this morning and is being detained at Blanchardstown Garda Station under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act.

Shortly after 8.30am gardaí were alerted to the device by members of the public, whom it is understood only narrowly missed being hit by the object thrown from a passing vehicle.

Gardaí called in the Army's Bomb Disposal Unit and nearby apartments were evacuated and traffic diverted while the device was removed.

A Defence Forces spokesman confirmed the object had been removed for safe detonation and examination.
