A lone raider carrying a sawn-off shotgun entered the premises at Briarhill Shopping Centre at about 4.30pm, demanded cash and left with an undisclosed sum.

Gardaí later arrested a 21-year-old man and recovered a firearm and cash nearby, a Garda spokesman said.

A green BMW car believed to be associated with the incident was located at Ballybrit Heights.

The man is being held at Mill Street Garda station under section 30 of the Offences against the State Act 1939.

Gardaí appealed to anyone who may have seen anything suspicious at the Briarhill shopping centre between 4pm and 5pm yesterday or at Ballybrit Heights to contact them on 091-538000, the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666111 or at any Garda station.
