Lagos - Shell said yesterday that local gunmen had left the oil rigs where they had been holding 165 workers hostage in the remote mangrove swamps of the Niger Delta in southern Nigeria.

"Since early this afternoon all the community people left the rigs," a spokesman for Shell, Mr Andre van Strijp, said. "They left in the same type of boat they came with. All our workers are safe on the rigs."
