FAMED Irish folk singer Tommy Makem is to be honoured in his native town of Keady, Co Armagh, by a new community and arts centre which is to be named after him.

Armagh City Council has decided to name the multimillion project after the late singer, who performed for several years in Ireland and overseas with the Clancy Brothers, another top group.

It has also been proposed that the town square in

Keady be renamed “Makem Square”.

A festival of song is being organised in Armagh this week from October 4th to 6th to commemorate Makem.

Work on the building of the new south Armagh community centre is to begin early in 2013.
