An Armagh Sinn Fein councillor, Mr Noel Sheridan, last night called for calm within the nationalist community as arson attacks across the city caused considerable damage.

Fourteen buses were destroyed at the Ulster Bus depot on Loughgall Road. At nearby Alexander Road, Fane Valley Creamery was destroyed.

A Catholic man from Armagh was in a serious condition in hospital last night after he was knocked down by an RUC Land Rover.

The incident happened at 10 p.m. on Ogle Street, Armagh. A spokesman for the RUC said the police were investigating reports of a hostile crowd attempting to set fire to a premises.
