BUENOS AIRES - The Buenos Aires premiere of Evita brought timid applause from the audience and protests on the street outside the theatre on Monday night. Despite a call from the Vice President, Mr Carlos Rucakuf, for a boycott of the Alan Parker musical as an insult to the late Argentine icon, Eva Peron, some 1,600 Buenos Aires celebrities attended the screening.

But outside the Gran Rex theatre, groups of protesters carried signs reading "Long live Evita, down with Madonna."

The US pop star plays the late Argentine first lady in the film.
