Washington - The Argentine President, Mr Fernando de la Rua, has apologised for his country's role in harbouring Nazi war criminals and promised to solve anti-Jewish bomb attacks in the last decade.

"Today, before the whole world, I want to express my sincerest regret and say we are sorry that this happened," the President said at the start of a two-day visit to Washington.

Argentina was ruled during the second World War by nationalist military officers, among them Juan Peron, an admirer of the Italian Fascist dictator, Mussolini.
