Stockholm - The Swedish parliament yesterday adopted a law for the protection of women, making it a crime to seek paid "sexual services" from January 1st, 1999.

According to the law, adopted by 181 votes to 92, any person caught soliciting a prostitute, whether man or woman, will be liable to a sentence of six months to a year in prison.

However, the Riksdag has not banned prostitution in itself. Those carrying out this profession can therefore continue to offer their services without breaking the law.
