Co Galway councillors have been urged to reject the proposed closure of 19 small rural polling stations in the county, which has been described as "anti rural and anti democratic".

The Fianna Fail TD Mr Noel Treacy described the cuts as an outrageous attack on democracy in rural areas. He would fight the closures "tooth and nail". The proposal from the Minister for the Environment, Mr Howlin, should be dropped immediately, said Mr Treacy.
