Chile: Furious relatives of 45 soldiers feared frozen to death in the Chilean Andes raged at military officers yesterday for leading dozens of ill-equipped teenage recruits into a blizzard.

As rescuers scoured the snow-shrouded Antuco volcano for 29 young soldiers who were still missing, grieving families identified 16 bodies recovered so far.

Most of the dead and missing were teenage recruits who enlisted just one month ago and went into the mountains on a basic training exercise without gear for the early-winter snow storm that blinded and disorientated the group.

Meanwhile, families were reunited with 112 soldiers and officers evacuated by helicopter from a mountain shelter where they had been trapped for four days. - (Reuters)
