A number of wines from the Alsace region of Fiance have been contaminated with a liquid refrigerant which can lead to very serious illness. The Department of Health yesterday issued a warning to anyone who may have bought the affected wine, particularly in France, Germany or the Netherlands, and brought it into Ireland.

The contaminated wine is particular consignments of Vin d'Alsace Edelzwicker (1995, 1996 or without year). It is marketed under the following brand names Alsace Willen, Cave de Vieil Aarmand, Edelzwicker Cave Co operative de Wuenheim, Pierre Mderheim, Reflets de France and Wolfberger.

It is known that affected batches have been on sale in France, Germany and the Netherlands but have been recalled from the market. The Department has advised anyone who may have purchased the affected wines while abroad to contact their local health board.
