A 52 year old man appeared on a total of 265 sex charges at Kilkenny District Court yesterday.

A 52 year old man appeared on a total of 265 sex charges at Kilkenny District Court yesterday.

The court heard that when the charges were read out to him at Kilkenny Garda station that morning, the accused man had replied "not guilty" to each count.

Eleven alleged victims were named in the charges, which range from buggery to gross indecency and indecent assault.

Many relate to an institution in Kilkenny and date from 1972 to 1978.

The accused was accompanied in court by his wife. Some of the alleged victims sat at the back of the court.

Dressed casually in a jumper, slacks and three quarter length jacket, the man remained impassive as details relating to the case were outlined.

The former Kilkenny resident, who now lives in greater Dublin, first appeared at Dun Laoghaire District Court on Thursday.

Five sample charges were preferred against him and he was remanded to Kilkenny District Court on a personal bail of £1,000 and independent bail of £3,000, which was put forward by his wife.

Garda Noel Maher gave evidence that he further charged the man, who cannot be named, with the remaining 260 charges yesterday.

Insp Aidan Roche said that four weeks would be sufficient for a book of evidence to be prepared.

The book is expected to be completed in time for the May 14th sitting of Kilkenny District Court.

The accused man was remanded on continuing bail to next Tuesday's court sitting.

He has handed in his passport and was ordered to sign on at Dun Laoghaire Garda station between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. each Monday and Friday.
