London - The disgraced British former cabinet minister, Mr Jonathan Aitken, has told how he was "seriously tempted" by suicide when his political career collapsed as a result of his perjury conviction.

In his book about the case, Pride And Perjury, to be published later this month, Mr Aitken said he was saved by the love of his son, William (14), and by prayer. Mr Aitken had been spoken of as a future prime minister before he was convicted of perjury and perverting the course of justice in a libel case against the Guardian and Granada Television and jailed for 18 months.
