ELECTRICITY SUPPLY firm Airtricity is to start an advertising campaign today to poach household customers from the ESB and Bord Gáis.

The Scottish-owned company has been supplying to businesses for 10 years, and recently started offering electricity to householders. It now claims to have 70,000 customers in the Republic.

Its move into the domestic supply market and Bord Gáis’s move this year to mount a vigorous campaign to attract customers from ESB has seen increased competition in the market.

Bord Gáis has taken more than 100,000 customers from the ESB in recent months by offering a reduction of between 10 and 14 per cent in electricity bills. It has used a high-profile advertising campaign to attract new householders.

Airtricity said yesterday it was offering a 13 per cent savings on ESB rates, and would start TV, radio, outdoor and online advertising “to aggressively target the consumer-switching market”. It said customers could switch their accounts in five minutes using the company’s website airtricity.com
