Moscow - Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union stand on the threshold of an AIDS epidemic that can still be contained if action is taken fast, the United Nations AIDS prevention body (UNAIDS) said yesterday.

A surge in the use of injected drugs in former communist countries has led to a sharp increase in infections with the HIV virus which now threatens the broader population, a UNAIDS report said.
