Allied Irish chief executive officer Eugene Sheehy “has the full support” of the company’s board and there is “no question of his resignation”, a spokeswoman for the bank said today by phone.

The comment followed weekend media reports that Bank of Ireland's chief executive Brian Goggin may be about to retire.

Bank of Ireland has not contradicted a report that Mr Goggin is preparing to step down. At 1.50pm in Dublin shares in Bank of Ireland were up 2 per cent at 96 cent while AIB stock was 6 per cent higher at €2.15.
