Up to $250,000 dollars could be raised at the annual Friends of Sinn Féin dinner which Mr Adams will address.

A party spokesman said the proceeds will go to an independent fund for families of construction workers killed in the hijack attacks.

"None of the money will come to Sinn Féin or Friends of Sinn Féin. All of the money made from the dinner will go to this fund," he said.

Mr Adams will travel to Ottowa this weekend to meet Canadian government officials to brief them on the status of the Northern Ireland peace process.
