Abandoned horse dies

ANIMAL WELFARE groups have appealed for action to deal with abandoned horses in the Limerick area

ANIMAL WELFARE groups have appealed for action to deal with abandoned horses in the Limerick area. A horse had to be destroyed this week after it was found malnourished on the city’s outskirts.

James Butler, an inspector with the Limerick Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, said he and a colleague had been feeding the horse near Castletroy, but the animal had “gone downhill” in recent days. “The other horses are okay at the moment but they might go down the same road in the future.”

Marion Fitzgibbon, chairwoman of Limerick Animal Welfare, said: “We’ve had huge issues concerning horses in Limerick over the past few years. It’s an ongoing issue, but I don’t know what the answer is. Horses are left abandoned all the time.”
