A post-mortem on the body of an infant found on waste ground in the townland of Knocknagoun, at Rylane, in north Cork, revealed the baby boy was stillborn.

The mother, in her 20s, has been interviewed by gardai and is receiving counselling. The body was discovered on Monday by a man walking his dog.

There is no question of legal charges against the woman and it is understood that health board personnel and gardai are more concerned now about her health. The body was taken to the Cork University Hospital on Monday, where the assistant State pathologist, Dr Maire Cassidy, carried out the post-mortem.

Following an appeal, the mother contacted a Garda station.
