WASHINGTON - Some 64,000 Americans may die prematurely each year because of air pollution which aggravates lung and heart disease, the Natural Resources Defence Council has said in a study.

The environmental group said people face a risk of dying one to two years prematurely from exposure to polluting air particles in almost every metropolitan area, although pollution levels in most of the 239 cities analysed were below current health standards for particulates.
