THE Western Health Board is to seek permission from the Department of Health to draw up a plan for a hospital in Galway costing over £60 million.

The board backed a proposal by Dr J.J. Gilmartin, who was representing 60 medical consultants in Galway. He said yesterday changes in health care and patient needs required a radically revised brief.

Since 1982, the board had sought funds to refurbish and expand University College Hospital, Galway.

The board hopes to provide facilities in the expanded hospital for cardiac surgery, neurosurgery and treatment of certain cancers, and to end the transferring of over 1,800 patients a year for operations or treatment in Dublin and Cork.
