GROZNY - More than 600 civilians have been killed in a continuing Russian artillery and aerial bombardment of the Chechen village of Samashki, according to witnesses. They spoke of "many bodies" lying in the streets yesterday.

The report by the village elders, who were able to leave Samashki and go to the Chechen capital, Grozny, could not be independently confirmed as the village in western Chechnya was sealed off.
