UJJAIN - Sixty Hindu worshippers were crushed or suffocated to death and scores were injured in stampedes in India yesterday as they gathered to celebrate a new moon festival.

Officials said 39 people, including five children, were killed and dozens injured in the town of Ujjain in central Madhya Pradesh state when worshippers surged down a narrow temple staircase.
